Last month I attended San Francisco’s annual Cherry Blossom Festival in Japantown. Each year the festival features food, crafts, performances, demonstrations, art, and a celebration of Japanese culture set agains the backdrop of (you guessed it) cherry blossom trees. There is always an ikebana show during the festival, so I braved the crowds and made my way to see the beautiful flower art.
Similar to last year, the show featured designs from members of the Ikebana Teachers Federation representing three schools: Ohara, Sogetsu, Ikenobo, and Wafu Kai. Of course, my sensei Soho Sakai was on hand to represent Sogetsu. All the designs were beautiful, but I still can’t distinguish between the different styles. Can you? Here are the photos:
